At David Lloyd Tools, we design and handcraft our carbide tipped chisels right here in York, using British steel shafts and traditional ash handles — because we believe a well-made tool should feel as good in your hand as the work it helps you create.
Our Carbide Woodturning Chisels
Every carbide woodturning chisel in our range is built around a 10mm stainless steel shaft for strength, balance and longevity, with carbide tips that stay sharp far longer than traditional high speed steel chisels. Here’s what we offer:
Round Chisel (16mm) The workhorse of any woodturner’s toolkit. Perfect for flowing curves, general shaping and smooth finishing cuts. The 16mm carbide tip gives you confidence and control whether you’re roughing out a blank or refining a profile.
Square Chisel (15mm) — available in 90° and 2° curved Our square chisel comes in two versions to suit different techniques. The standard 90° is ideal for clean flat cuts and crisp shoulders, while the 2° curved square is a favourite for woodturners who prefer a slightly more forgiving cutting angle — particularly useful for finishing and scraping work.
Diamond Chisel The detail chisel. Its pointed carbide tip is perfect for getting into tight spaces, cutting fine details and producing crisp decorative lines that other chisels simply can’t reach. Once you’ve used a diamond chisel you’ll wonder how you managed without one.
Bullnose (20mm) When the job calls for more power, our larger round Bullnose chisel steps up. Mounted on a heavier 12mm stainless steel shaft, the 20mm carbide tip is designed for bigger blanks and heavier turning work where a standard chisel would feel underpowered.
Why Carbide?
Traditional high speed steel chisels do the job, but carbide tips hold their edge significantly longer — meaning less time at the grinder and more time at the lathe. For hobbyist woodturners especially, that’s a genuine quality of life improvement. You spend your time making, not maintaining.
Our carbide tips are replaceable too, so when the time does eventually come, you’re not replacing the whole chisel — just the tip.
